What’s in It for Me? (WIIFM)

Whether you are revising your resume, creating a cover letter, or preparing for an interview, always keep in mind that the person you want to impress is thinking: What’s In It For Me? (WIIFM)

The recruiter or interviewer or hiring manager wants to know the following:

  • Will this person bring value to our organization?
  • How quickly will they be productive?
  • Will they be a good fit with our culture?
  • Will my boss think I am smart to recommend this hire?
  • Will I have to recruit for this position again in a year?

Keep this in mind to change the focus from YOU (i.e., “Let me tell you why I want this job.”) to THEM (i.e., “Let me tell you why hiring me can be the best thing you ever did for the organization.”)
