Do you want to break into the Hidden Job Market?
Here are 3 tips to increase your chances of getting your next great job.
Be a Giver
When you reach out to connect to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, rather than making your connection request about you and what you need, make the request about the other person and you will be surprised at how much you can learn. “How can I help you?” or “Can I endorse you for the following skills …?” are very powerful questions. This allows you to add value immediately with a suggestion, a referral, or an endorsement, and it will establish you as a giver rather than a taker.
There are over 2 million groups on LinkedIn. Joining and actively participating in the right groups can be very effective for building relationships and expanding your reach. Find special interest groups that connect to your passion or to the industries you want to learn about or that will advance your career. Groups can give you a forum to speak to like-minded people and to discuss shared interests.
If you have trouble connecting with new people, reconnect with people you knew a while ago. Look at your old contact lists and start a search for people you remember, but have not spoken to in a while. Reach out on LinkedIn to reignite those relationships. Remember: It is very important to personalize each and every connection request that you send out. People are far more likely to accept your request if you either remind them of how they know you, or explain why they should connect with you.
